The Battle

History & Significance

The Hampshire beacon chain and the consequent alerting of the Solent forts were critical elements of the Armada defence in 1588. Calshot, Hurst, and Southsea castles were all placed on full alert as the Spanish fleet passed, and the Portsmouth garrison was reinforced. The Hampshire response demonstrated how effectively Henry VIII Device Fort programme of 1539 to 1545 had transformed the defensive capacity of the Solent.
