History & Significance

Lachlan Mor MacDonald — also known as Lachlan Mor of Dunyvaig — was the most formidable of the late Islay MacDonald chiefs, fighting simultaneously against the MacLeans, the government, and the anglicising Statutes policy. He defeated the MacLeans at the Battle of Traigh Ghruinart in 1598, killing Hector Mor MacLean in single combat. He resisted crown authority until his death in 1598, and his successors continued resistance for a further decade. His career represented the last coherent MacDonald military resistance to the government's Hebridean pacification policy.
