The Battle

History & Significance

The Ridley and Bell families of Tynedale engaged in a sustained blood feud from 1523, conducting mutual raids, livestock theft, and killings across the South Tyne valley. The feud exemplified the inward violence that characterised Tynedale society — a district so lawless that English Wardens classed it alongside Liddesdale as effectively ungovernable. The Ridley clan controlled the Haltwhistle area while the Bells operated from the Bellingham district, and the geography of the Tyne forced constant contact and competition.
