History & Significance

Lambert marched north to intercept Monck's advance from Scotland in February 1660, but his army rapidly deserted as soldiers chose the promise of restored pay and settlement that Monck represented. The confrontation at Coldstream was bloodless — Lambert's force simply melted away. Lambert fled south, was captured, and imprisoned. Monck marched to London, recalled the Long Parliament, and engineered the Restoration of Charles II. The collapse at Coldstream ended the Interregnum.
