Government forces conducted systematic operations through Galloway in 1684 dispersing armed conventicles and hunting Covenanting fugitives. The remote hills of Galloway had provided shelter for Covenanting refugees since 1679. These 1684 operations were particularly severe, with soldiers authorised to shoot on sight those found in arms or refusing the oath. The Galloway landscape became associated with Covenanting martyrdom.
