History & Significance

Woodbury Hill was the rebels main fortified camp east of Exeter. The entrenched position showed military sophistication — the rebels dug earthworks and positioned themselves to threaten Russell's supply lines. Russell's response was to starve them out by seizing nearby villages, forcing the decisive engagements at Fenny Bridges and Clyst St Mary.
