History & Significance

As Penruddock's diminishing Royalist force reached Devon in March 1655, Parliamentary cavalry from Exeter moved to cut off their line of advance. The Exeter garrison horse was the main intercepting force positioned ahead of the insurgents while others pursued from behind.
