History & Significance

A government force sent from mainland Scotland to impose royal authority in Orkney was ambushed and destroyed at Summerdale by the local Sinclairs who resented external interference. The battle is one of the last significant military actions in Orkney and demonstrated how remote the islands remained from central government control even in the sixteenth century. The Sinclairs of Orkney and the mainland Sinclairs were rival branches of the same family.
