History & Significance

The Welsh annals record multiple internal battles between Welsh kingdoms in the mid-tenth century. After Hywel Dda's death, his sons fought the men of Gwynedd repeatedly. The Brut y Tywysogion records battles in Arwystli (mid-Wales) between the dynasties of Gwynedd and Deheubarth. This was the period of maximum internal Welsh fragmentation between Hywel Dda's death and Gruffudd ap Llywelyn's unification. Location estimated in the contested border zone of Arwystli/Montgomeryshire.
