The Battle

History & Significance

Between the battles of Auldearn and Alford in 1645, the Covenanting commander General William Baillie conducted a careful strategic withdrawal through Strathspey, refusing to give Montrose the decisive engagement he sought. Baillie recognised that Montrose's Highland army was dangerous in a pitched battle and sought to preserve his force while Covenanting cavalry harassed Royalist foraging parties across Speyside.
