The Battle

History & Significance

Henry I conducted a second major Welsh campaign in 1121 following the Welsh revolt that had reversed many of the Angevin gains in south Wales. The campaign again used a multi-column approach but achieved less than the 1114 expedition as Welsh guerrilla tactics and difficult terrain negated Norman cavalry superiority. The limited results of 1121 demonstrated that Wales could not be permanently subdued by periodic large expeditions and would require sustained military occupation.
