History & Significance

Walmer Castle, the southernmost of the three Downs forts, was commissioned and garrisoned in 1539 as part of Henry VIII largest coastal fortification programme. Together with Deal and Sandown it created interlocking fields of fire across the anchorage most suitable for an invasion fleet. Walmer later became the official residence of the Lord Warden of the Cinque Ports.
