Hastings was fortified as part of Alfred east Sussex defensive line. The town controlled the approach to the Weald from the sea and was a natural landing point for Danish raiders approaching from the east. The Burghal Hidage includes Hastings in the Sussex chain alongside Chichester, Burpham, Lewes, and Pevensey. The pre-existing Iron Age defences on the headland were probably incorporated into the Anglo-Saxon works.
