History & Significance

A fleet of 94 ships — the same force that had raided Ipswich and fought at Maldon — moved north and attacked Bamburgh in Northumbria. The strategic sweep from East Anglia to Northumbria showed the scale of Olaf's operations. The Northumbrian ealdormen could not mount effective resistance to such a large and mobile force.

Forces Involved

Fleet (94 ships): c. 3,000–5,000. Northumbrians: c. 500–1,500.
