Aethelhere of East Anglia, who had replaced Anna, fought on Penda side at the Winwaed and was killed there. Bede notes that Aethelhere was the cause of the war. His death along with Penda ended the coalition that had dominated England, and his successor had to acknowledge Northumbrian and Mercian overlordship.
