History & Significance

At Crediton, royal troops under Sir Peter Carew attempted to disperse gathering rebels but the confrontation escalated when barns near the town being used as a rebel powder store and shelter caught fire. Blamed on the government troops by the rebels and on the rebels by the crown, the Crediton burning inflamed opinion across Devon and drove uncommitted commons firmly into the rebel camp. It was a pivotal moment in broadening the western rising.
