History & Significance

The Hampshire coastal muster of 1539 addressed the most critical strategic weakness in England south coast — the vulnerability of Southampton Water and the Solent anchorage. The commissioning of Calshot, Hurst, and Southsea castles directly resulted from the 1539 defence review, ensuring that by 1545 England had a coherent system of interlocking artillery forts covering its principal southern anchorage.
