History & Significance

Lincoln was the last of the Five Boroughs to submit to Edward the Elder. Its fall completed the reconquest of the southern Danelaw. Lincoln had been a major Roman city and remained an important Viking administrative centre as one of the five principal towns of the Danelaw. The submission of all five boroughs within a few years was the culmination of the systematic reconquest campaign that Edward and Aethelflaed had planned together.
