During the minority of James V, the Hamilton and Lennox Stewart factions fought for control of the young king. At Linlithgow Bridge, the Earl of Lennox attempted to seize James V from the Hamilton guardians and was defeated and killed. The battle confirmed the Hamiltons as the dominant faction in Scotland during the minority and established their position as second in line to the Scottish throne.
