History & Significance

The opening skirmishing of the Nine Years War as the English attempted to assert control over Fermanagh. Hugh Maguire resisted English attempts to collect cess (taxation) and extend sheriffs' authority into Ulster. These early engagements prefigured the larger campaigns of the Nine Years War.
