History & Significance

During the winter of 1644-45, Montrose moved his army into the remote country of Badenoch as he prepared for the great winter campaign that would culminate in Inverlochy. Operating from the Atholl and Badenoch passes he gathered supplies, recruited additional men and planned the audacious midwinter march through Argyll. The Badenoch base gave him security while Covenanting armies wintered in the Lowlands.
