History & Significance

Gipeswic (Ipswich) was one of the most important Anglo-Saxon trading emporia in England, with extensive continental connections. Its sacking by the Great Heathen Army destroyed much of the settlement; the archaeological record shows a sharp decline in the late ninth century. The loss of Ipswich crippled East Anglian trade during the Danish period.
