History & Significance

Lochmaben Castle in Annandale was the ancestral Bruce family stronghold and a key Dumfriesshire position. Its capture by the Guardians in 1299 was part of the broader Scottish recovery of the south-west during the period between Falkirk and Bruces coronation. The area around Lochmaben would be contested throughout the Wars of Independence — it eventually became one of the few Scottish royal castles to remain in continuous Scottish hands through the second war.
