The Battle

History & Significance

Under Antoninus Pius, the governor Quintus Lollius Urbicus launched a new offensive that pushed the frontier from Hadrian's Wall to the Clyde-Forth isthmus. A major Brigantian revolt had to be suppressed in this period — attested by a coin issue celebrating British victories. Yorkshire's garrison forts were adjusted to support the northern advance. The Antonine Wall was held for about twenty years before the frontier returned to Hadrian's Wall, probably after further Brigantian trouble.
