General George Monck conducted systematic military operations through the central and northern Highlands in 1654 to suppress the Glencairn Rising and enforce Cromwellian authority. He marched his army through Atholl, Badenoch, Strathspey and the Great Glen, overawing clan chiefs and accepting their submissions. The campaign involved no major battles but numerous small encounters and the systematic construction of a network of garrison forts.
