The Battle

History & Significance

The Elizabethan reorganisation of Cornish coastal defences in 1587, the year before the Armada, involved a comprehensive review of all Device Forts, beacon stations, and militia responsibilities in the county. Pendennis Castle was substantially reinforced and its garrison brought to war strength. The preparatory work proved decisive in enabling the rapid Cornish response when the Armada was sighted the following year.
