History & Significance

Sallustius Lucullus governed Britain after Agricola departure. He oversaw the systematic withdrawal from Scotland and consolidation of the Stanegate road as the working frontier. Domitian had him executed — allegedly for naming a new lance type the Lucullan lance — but before that he managed the painful contraction from Mons Graupius gains. The withdrawal was precipitated by Domitian recalling Legio II Adiutrix to the Danube in 87 AD.
