History & Significance

As Henry VII's dominant official in Wales, Sir Rhys ap Thomas suppressed endemic border raiding and maintained royal authority in south Wales. The Welsh Marches had been plagued by lawlessness for generations. Rhys was appointed to the Council of Wales and the Marches and conducted numerous military operations against bandits and rebels. The context is important: without this pacification, the Tudor regime in Wales could not have been consolidated.
