The Battle

History & Significance

The Covenanting army forced the Tyne at Newburn against English defenders and routed the English army. The defeat was so complete that Charles I could not continue the Bishops Wars. The Covenanters occupied Newcastle and cut off London coal supplies. This Scottish military success forced Charles I to call Parliament — the event that triggered the English Civil War. A Scottish victory that changed British history.
