History & Significance

Alfred cemented his alliance with Aethelred, the Mercian nobleman who had become the effective ruler of English Mercia after the Danish occupation of eastern Mercia. By marrying his daughter Aethelflaed to Aethelred and granting him London and Oxford, Alfred created a durable Anglo-Mercian partnership that would be the foundation of the reconquest. Aethelred was the only non-royal ruler in England who consistently cooperated with Wessex.
