The Battle

History & Significance

In 1584 the Protestant lords who had supported the Ruthven Raid attempted to seize Stirling Castle to recapture the king and reimpose Protestant supervision of government. The coup failed — James VI had reinforced the garrison and the approaching Protestant lords were met by royal troops. Several lords fled to England. The failed coup allowed James VI to govern without Protestant constraints for the next two years and established his authority over both church and nobility.
