History & Significance

During the campaign of 1016 before Edmund Ironside's death, the two sides clashed at several points in Kent including at Otford. The Anglo-Saxon Chronicle records engagements in Kent that formed part of the rolling campaign across southern England. Control of the Medway crossings and the Kentish ports was critical to Danish strategic security — a hostile Kent could threaten communications with Scandinavia.
