History & Significance

Knaresborough Castle, commanding the Nidd gorge, held a Royalist garrison throughout 1644. Parliament besieged it after Marston Moor but the castle held out into December. Its surrender completed Parliamentary control of the West Riding and isolated the remaining Royalist garrisons in Yorkshire.
