History & Significance

In the years immediately before the Glenfruin massacre, MacGregor raiding into Glenorchy intensified as the clan's pressure from Campbell and Drummond neighbours reduced their territorial base. The MacGregors of Glenstrae raided extensively into the Breadalbane area of Glenorchy, stealing cattle and engaging in violence that the Campbells of Breadalbane demanded should be suppressed. These raids were the immediate trigger for the Colquhoun decision to mount the large punitive expedition that ended in disaster at Glenfruin.
