The Battle

History & Significance

Kildrummy Castle in Aberdeenshire was Bruces strongest northern fortress and the refuge of his family and supporters while he was hiding after Methven. The English prince besieged it with a substantial force. The castle was betrayed from within: the English bribed a blacksmith named Osbourne to start a fire in the grain store. The garrison surrendered; Nigel Bruce was hanged and beheaded. Bruces female relatives fled north but were captured at Tain. Kildrummys fall left Bruce completely isolated — the low point before his eventual recovery.
