History & Significance

In the period after Bothwell Bridge, surviving Covenanting radicals held armed conventicles in the Ayrshire hills where worshippers came with weapons. A conventicle near Sorn in east Ayrshire was discovered by government patrols and an engagement occurred as armed Covenanters defended their position. These armed conventicles were a characteristic form of Covenanting resistance during the Killing Time.
