Ine of Wessex fought Ceolred of Mercia at Wodnesbeorg (Wanborough). The battle was recorded in the Anglo-Saxon Chronicle as a major engagement. The exact outcome is disputed; it appears to have been inconclusive or a Mercian success, as Ine abdicated to go to Rome in 726 without having resolved the Mercian threat.
