The Battle

History & Significance

The failed attack on Hull was the military turning point of Bigod's revolt. Hull had been surrendered peacefully to the main Pilgrimage in October; now the garrison resisted. The repulse broke Bigod's force. Henry VIII used the attack as proof of continued rebellion and declared the original pardon void, authorising mass executions.
