The Battle

History & Significance

Ulfcytel of East Anglia, who had previously won respect fighting the Danes at Thetford in 1004, met Thorkell's great army at Ringmere. The Cambridgeshire contingent fled and the battle became a rout. The Chronicle records that no shire would help another — symptomatic of the collapse of coordinated resistance under Aethelred. East Anglia was ravaged for three months afterward.
