The Battle

History & Significance

Following Montrose's first victories at Tippermuir and Aberdeen in autumn 1644, the Covenanting government organised counter-operations throughout Perthshire to contain Royalist influence. Covenanting militia and garrisons were established across the county. These counter-operations were consistently frustrated by Montrose's superior mobility and the willingness of Highland men to join his force.
