History & Significance

After Ellendun, Ecgberht sent his son Aethelwulf with Bishop Ealhstan and Ealdorman Wulfheard to expel the Mercian sub-king Baldred from Kent. Baldred fled north of the Thames. The Chronicle records that the men of Kent, Surrey, Sussex and Essex then turned to Ecgberht because they had been wrongfully forced away from his kinsmen. Mercian rule in the southeast was over.
