History & Significance

The Protestation of May 1641, taken by MPs and then required of all adult male Englishmen, was a loyalty oath to Protestant religion and parliamentary rights. Its administration across England in 1641-1642 was sometimes accompanied by local confrontations between those who refused and those enforcing it, particularly in strongly Catholic or royalist areas. The Protestation lists are among the most comprehensive pre-war records of English political allegiance.
