The Battle

History & Significance

The Maidstone inland muster of 1545 reflected the same principle of combining fixed fort garrisons with mobile inland reserves that was applied across all the southern counties during the French invasion crisis. Kent, with its long coastline and the vulnerable Goodwin Sands anchorage, required particular vigilance. The mobile reserve at Maidstone could reach any point on the Kentish coast within a day via the Roman roads.
