The Chronicle records that in 519 Cerdic and Cynric assumed the West Saxon kingdom after defeating a British force at a ford. This is treated as the founding moment of the kingdom of Wessex and the West Saxon dynasty that would eventually unite England. The battle at the ford consolidated their rule over the Hampshire region.
