History & Significance

Emperor Septimius Severus launched Rome's last major offensive into Scotland in 208-211 AD, advancing to the Tay. Cramond on the Forth was a major supply base and naval port. His campaign penetrated into Caledonian territory — the tribes adopted guerrilla tactics and Severus is said to have suffered 50,000 casualties in the campaign. He died at York in 211 before completing the conquest.
