History & Significance

Enfield Chase in Middlesex saw recurring disorders when crown attempts to enclose and improve parts of the chase displaced commoners who depended on its common resources. The Enfield disorders in the late 1620s were relatively minor compared to the western forest riots but demonstrated that the conflict between crown forest improvement and commoner rights was not confined to the remote western forests.
