The Battle

History & Significance

The Exmouth blockhouse established in 1540 guarded the mouth of the Exe estuary, protecting the approach to Exeter — the principal city of Devon. An enemy force that could sail up the Exe would threaten the administrative and commercial centre of the county. The blockhouse, though smaller than the major Device Forts, was part of the same network of secondary coastal defences that extended Henry VIII programme to all major estuaries.
