The Battle

History & Significance

Sir Thomas Wyatt the Younger's rebellion against Mary I's Spanish marriage began at Maidstone. He was supposed to coordinate with simultaneous risings in the Midlands and south-west, but these collapsed. However, when a royal force under the Duke of Norfolk marched to suppress him, much of it defected to Wyatt — including the Whitecoats of London. The rebellion came dangerously close to overthrowing Mary.
