The Battle

History & Significance

The Norse earls of Orkney enforced their authority over the treacherous Pentland Firth passage, exacting tribute from vessels attempting to pass between Orkney and the Scottish mainland. The Pentland Firth with its notorious tides and currents was one of the most dangerous passages in northern waters and Norse control of it gave the Orkney earldom an enormous strategic advantage in controlling movement between the North Sea and Atlantic.
