History & Significance

Isurium Brigantum (Aldborough near Boroughbridge) was the civitas capital of the Brigantes — the administrative centre of Roman Yorkshire. In the third and fourth centuries, Yorkshire faced periodic unrest requiring military response. The substantial town walls at Aldborough date from this period of defensive rebuilding. The site preserves some of the best examples of Roman mosaic floors in northern England.
